Chapter 12

Festival Of Lights

“You really have a way with animals, don’t you?” Sera giggled.

Hunter glanced up from his crouched position as he brushed his fingers through Maya’s soft golden fur, avoiding the slobbery strings she attempted to coat his arm with. “Yeah. Much better than people”—he chuckled nervously and stood—“well, most of them anyway.”

The night was clear and cloudless, and a cold chill whistled through the streets with the wind, rustling Sera’s golden blonde hair. “Do you mean me?” Sera asked coyly.

Although his confidence was growing, this was the first girl he had ever been on a date with, let alone kissed or held their hand. It made his nerves prickle his skin distractingly. But, despite that, he played his anxious nature off the best he could, unable to keep from grinning. “You’re not the only one.” But you are my favorite; he finished his words in thought.

“I’ll take it.” She walked ahead, giving a little wave to Maya as the young pup bounded joyfully into the crowd again. Sera was stunning, dressed in a long, crimson gown with lantern lights and magical arcane beads making her hair and piercing blue eyes shine like sapphires tangled in gold threads. It wasn’t often she put her hair down, letting the wind gently glide through it like blades of grass, but tonight was a special night. It was Alnwick’s Festival of Lights.

Sera wasn’t the only one dressed to the nines. Emery had fashioned Hunter a well-made deep blue suit and maroon shirt to match, and his messy dark brown hair was cut shorter and drooped to one side, giving him a more distinguished look than usual. He hadn’t worn anything this nice in all his life. It was both uncomfortable and not at the same time. The fabrics were soft yet rigid, and the tie around his neck clamped his throat tighter than he was used to, but when he saw himself in the windows of the passing shops, he appreciated what Emery had done for him. He actually felt like a person now, not some nameless street urchin that nobody cared about.

Hunter stood, catching up with Sera again, staring lovingly as she sauntered down the streets. He loved everything about her, and not just because of her appearance. Her personality, her energy, and her magical prowess were intoxicating. There wasn’t a single moment over the last week he hadn’t thought about their kiss. The softness of her pink lips, the curves of her back he gripped tightly, and the feeling of her body so close to his, like they were one. His long hours at The Broken Veil were often filled with vivid images of that moment, staring blankly at the pages of books or in the middle of stocking shelves. Luckily, Emery understood, not that his understanding didn’t come without a few teasing words anytime he’d been caught doing so.

The streets were bustling with loud voices from all corners of the city, chaotically cheering with screams of joy and amusement.
